South African helium producer Renergen, through its subsidiary Tetra4, has completed commissioning Phase 1 of its 70,000 cubic feet per day (mcf/day) Virginia Gas Project in the Free State province, South Africa.
The company has achieved stable production of liquid helium following commissioning and expects to ramp up to nameplate capacity in Q4 2026.
It is storing liquid helium while the logistics of initial deliveries are finalised under existing offtake agreements.
In June, Renergen’s subsidiary Tetra4 signed a five-year take-or-pay contract with an unnamed Asian industrial gases company for helium from its Virginia Gas Project. The agreement represents around 15% of the project’s expected Phase 1 nameplate capacity.
Renergen the commissioning stage of Phase 1 in August of this year.
After the completion of Phase 1, the company projects annualised combined helium and liquefied natural gas (LNG) revenues of more than $27m.
Phase 2 is around 13 times the size of Phase 1 and is expected to produce around 900 mcf/day of helium.
The company previously said it expects to begin construction of Phase 2 during the second half of the year, with a projected development timeline of three to four years.
