The demand for Renewable Energy Certificates (REC) continues to rise among industrial players in Indonesia. In response, PT PLN (Persero), through its PLN Main Distribution Unit (UID) Riau and Riau Islands, has distributed 592 REC units, equivalent to 592 Megawatt hours (MWh) of green electricity, to PT Inecda Plantation, a palm oil industry company based in Indragiri Hulu, Riau.

PLN’s REC program guarantees that the electricity used by customers is sourced from renewable energy (EBT) and is recognized internationally. Each REC certificate ensures compliance with global standards through the APX Tradable Instrument for Global Renewables (TIGRs) tracking system from the United States.

As a leading force in Indonesia’s energy transition, PLN remains committed to expanding its green electricity services from renewable energy plants. This initiative aligns with efforts to enhance the competitiveness of Indonesia’s industrial sector, a key pillar of the national economy.

According to Tonny Bellamy, General Manager of PLN UID Riau and Riau Islands, the adoption of REC by the industrial sector supports Indonesia’s Net Zero Emission 2060 target.

“Through REC, customers actively contribute to emission reduction by shifting from fossil-based energy to clean, renewable energy. We are committed to providing clean energy solutions that foster the development of a green industry in Indonesia,” Bellamy stated.

He further emphasized that REC is available for both public and corporate customers seeking renewable energy solutions, with each unit equivalent to 1 MWh of green electricity.

“We are prepared to meet customer demands, including ensuring electricity sourced from renewable energy. PLN is also open to collaborations aimed at reducing global carbon emissions, including our partnership with PT Inecda Plantation,” he added.

Khamdi, General Manager of PT Inecda Plantation, reaffirmed the company’s commitment to green energy adoption as part of its sustainability strategy.

“We hope to maintain and strengthen our collaboration with PLN to generate a positive impact by implementing sustainable business principles. Our focus remains on Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) practices, supporting Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for a greener future,” Khamdi stated.

The distribution of REC certificates marks another milestone in Indonesia’s push for sustainability, encouraging industries to actively participate in reducing carbon footprints and promoting eco-friendly business practices.
