Gujarat has emerged as a significant contributor to India’s renewable energy landscape, accounting for 15% of the country’s total installed renewable capacity, state Power Minister Kanu Desai announced during the Legislative Assembly session. He revealed that Gujarat’s renewable energy capacity stands at 32,924 MW, while India’s total is 2,14,677 MW.

Highlighting the state’s achievements, Desai noted that solar rooftop systems have been deployed in over 3 lakh homes under the PM Surya Ghar Yojana, representing 40% of the national figure. Additionally, under the ‘Surya Gujarat Yojana’, 5.21 lakh households are generating 2,073 MW of solar power through rooftop installations.

In the wind energy segment, Gujarat’s contribution is noteworthy, with 12,584 MW of installed capacity—26% of India’s total wind power output. The state also hosts 18,125 MW of solar power capacity, making up 18% of the national total.

To further promote solar adoption, the government has earmarked ₹100 crore to subsidize metering and connectivity costs—offering ₹2,950 per connection for rooftop solar systems up to 6 kW.

Desai also highlighted relief measures in electricity billing. In March 2024, a fuel charge reduction of 50 paise per unit benefited 1.5 crore consumers, followed by another 40 paise cut in December. Overall, state-run power companies have extended over ₹2,000 crore in billing relief to residents.
