Vienna’s Ernst Happel Stadium Installs Solar System to Boost Sustainability

default

A solar system has been installed on the roof of Vienna’s Ernst Happel Stadium, marking a significant step toward sustainability. The array features over 9,300 solar panels, 80,000 trapezoidal rails, and more than 5,000 photovoltaic optimizers. It is designed to generate 3,800 MWh of solar electricity annually—enough to power 1,100 local households.

The installation process is scheduled from late November 2024 to early March 2025. Due to the stadium’s oval-shaped roof, each trapezoidal panel was custom-designed to fit the structure.

A collaboration between Wien Energie and Wiener Netze ensures that the solar system is fully integrated into the stadium’s existing grid. The connection project is expected to be completed by the end of 2025.

Peter Hacker, Vienna City Councillor for Sports, emphasized the significance of the achievement, noting that a carbon-free stadium was once merely a vision but is now close to becoming a reality. He praised the speed and precision of the construction work and highlighted that the Happel Stadium will produce more electricity than it consumes, contributing to environmental and climate protection in the city.

Future plans for the stadium include integrating heat pumps, energy storage systems, and connections to the nearby stadium swimming pool to maximize the use of excess energy.

Vienna is striving to achieve climate neutrality by 2040. The city has already surpassed its 250 MW solar power target ahead of schedule, including 50 MW from city-owned land.

Currently, Vienna generates enough electricity to power approximately 72,000 homes. Over the past five years, the Austrian capital has increased its solar power capacity fivefold. In 2024, Austria added 2.2 GW of solar capacity, raising its total to 8.3 GW.
