Adani Enterprises Unveils India’s First Hydrogen-Powered Truck in Chhattisgarh

In a landmark move towards clean energy adoption in industrial logistics, Adani Enterprises, the flagship company of the Adani Group, flagged off India’s first hydrogen fuel cell truck in Raipur, Chhattisgarh. The initiative aims to gradually phase out diesel vehicles across the company’s logistics operations, promoting a sustainable shift in the mining and cargo transportation sectors.

The hydrogen-powered truck, developed in collaboration with a major Indian auto manufacturer and a global energy technology firm, is equipped with smart systems and three hydrogen tanks. It has the capacity to carry up to 40 tonnes of cargo over a 200-kilometre range. The pilot deployment will be used to transport coal from the Gare Pelma III block to the Chhattisgarh State Power Plant.

The truck was officially flagged off by Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Shri Vishnu Deo Sai, who underscored the state’s leadership in adopting green technologies.

“The launch of India’s first hydrogen-powered truck in Chhattisgarh reflects the state’s commitment to sustainability. This initiative will significantly reduce our carbon footprint and set new standards for the industry,” said the Chief Minister.

Adani Enterprises serves as the Mine Developer and Operator (MDO) for the Gare Pelma III coal block, appointed by the state-owned Chhattisgarh State Power Generation Company Limited through a competitive bidding process.

Dr. Vinay Prakash, CEO of Natural Resources and Director at Adani Enterprises, highlighted the broader implications of the project.

“This hydrogen-powered truck initiative is a key step in the Adani Group’s decarbonisation journey. We are creating model mines with minimal environmental impact by integrating technologies such as autonomous dozer push, solar power, digital monitoring, and tree transplanters. Our goal is to ensure affordable and reliable electricity while redefining sustainable mining practices,” he said.

The project is a joint effort between Adani Natural Resources (ANR) and Adani New Industries Limited (ANIL). While ANR oversees mining logistics, ANIL is responsible for manufacturing and supplying hydrogen fuel cells. ANIL is also involved in green hydrogen production, solar modules, wind turbines, and battery systems.

Hydrogen fuel cell vehicles offer a sustainable alternative to diesel trucks, providing comparable range and load capacity with zero harmful emissions—only releasing water vapor and warm air. The switch from diesel to hydrogen in mining operations is expected to significantly reduce both noise pollution and India’s dependency on imported crude oil.

Adani Natural Resources has also emerged as the first in Asia to deploy Dozer Push Semi-Autonomous Technology, reinforcing its commitment to safety and environmental stewardship.

This rollout marks a critical milestone in India’s roadmap for decarbonising heavy industry transport and building a hydrogen-based energy ecosystem.
