The two key benefits of biogas and biomethane are its ability to be dispatched quickly and carbon capture affordability, according to Chris Huhne, the chair of the UK trade body the Anaerobic Digestion and Bioresources Association [ADBA].

Speaking on a webinar coinciding with Net Zero Week [5–11 July] and ahead of the World Biogas Summit in Birmingham in the UK [9–10 July], he said, “As a dispatchable resource, which can be turned on and off and easily stored, [biomethane] has fantastic advantages over intermittent resources like solar and wind … it really makes a difference in terms of cutting costs.”

The second takeaway Huhne set out was that in the process of purifying biomethane the CO2 is very dense and it’s therefore quite cheap to collect, capture and store.

“So one of the things which is very clear now is that biogenically created CO2, captured in the processing of biogas and being turned into biomethane, is far cheaper than other ways of capturing CO2.”
