The ‘golden weld’ has been completed connecting Air Liquide’s facility in Rozenburg to the Porthos CO2 pipeline in the Netherlands.

The connection brings together the different elements of the CCS chain – CO2 capture, transport and permanent storage – marking another important step towards the realisation of the Porthos chain.

Air Liquide is one of Porthos’ initial customers, alongside Shell, Air Products and ExxonMobil. The company is currently working on the construction of its CO2 capture facility in Rozenburg. Using its proprietary Cryocap technology, CO2 is captured from industrial processes.

Martijn Lub, Project Manager at Air Liquide, said, “Large-scale decarbonisation in the Port of Rotterdam requires strong, collective effort, and this connection to the Porthos CO2 pipeline shows what we can achieve when we collaborate together.”

Once Porthos is operational – which is now targeted for the second half of 2027 “at the earliest” – Air Liquide will supply the captured CO2 to the Porthos collective pipeline. From there, the CO2 will be transported to the compressor station on the Maasvlakte, where it will be pressurised for onward transport through an offshore pipeline to the P18-A platform in the North Sea.

From the platform, the CO2 will be injected into depleted gas fields approximately 3.5km beneath the seabed for permanent safe storage. Around 2.5 million tonnes of CO2 will initially be captured and delivered each year.

The Porthos project is part of an effort to decarbonise the Port of Rotterdam, which accounts for approximately 15% of the Netherlands’ CO2 emissions.
