Al Ain City Municipality Launches Solar Soil Sterilization Project To Boost Sustainable Urban Agriculture

Al Ain City Municipality has introduced a new solar soil sterilization project aimed at improving soil quality and promoting sustainable agricultural practices across the city’s green spaces. The initiative reflects a shift away from heavy chemical treatments and focuses on using natural energy to maintain healthier landscapes and urban environments.

The project works by using sunlight as a natural sterilizing agent. As explained by Al Yazia Rashid Al Neyadi, selected soil areas are covered with transparent plastic sheets that allow sunlight to pass through while trapping heat underneath. This creates a greenhouse-like effect, raising the soil temperature over a period of two to four weeks. The increased heat is strong enough to eliminate harmful plant diseases, fungi, and weed seeds naturally without relying on chemical pesticides.

To ensure effective results, the municipality carefully monitors temperature and moisture levels throughout the process. This controlled approach helps maintain the right conditions for sterilization while protecting the soil’s natural balance. Alongside this, approved organic and chemical fertilizers are used in a planned manner to support soil productivity and enhance the overall outcome of the treatment.

The initiative is expected to bring multiple benefits. One of the key advantages is a significant reduction in environmental impact. By cutting down on the use of synthetic pesticides, the project helps protect groundwater and the surrounding ecosystem. At the same time, it encourages stronger plant growth by improving soil fertility and increasing beneficial biological activity within the soil.

Another important outcome is cost efficiency. Traditional soil treatment methods often require repeated use of expensive chemical inputs. By using solar energy, the municipality can reduce these recurring costs while maintaining effective soil management. This makes the approach both environmentally and economically sustainable in the long run.

The project is part of a broader effort by the municipality to adopt innovative and eco-friendly practices in urban management. By integrating renewable energy solutions into agriculture and landscaping, the city is working toward a greener and more sustainable future. Officials have indicated that similar initiatives may be introduced in the future to further improve environmental quality and resource management.

With this step, Al Ain is strengthening its position as a forward-looking city that values sustainability, innovation, and long-term environmental health.
