Arevon Energy, Inc., a prominent American energy developer, owner, and operator, recently held a milestone celebration to commemorate the construction progress of its Nighthawk Energy Storage Project in Poway, California. This large-scale project will feature 300 megawatts (MW) of capacity and 1,200 megawatt-hours (MWh) of energy storage, with the ability to power up to 385,000 homes for four hours each day during periods of peak electricity demand. The Nighthawk project represents a $600 million investment, and Arevon will both own and operate the facility.

Over the course of its operation, Nighthawk is expected to generate more than $30 million in local government payments, with approximately $12 million going directly to the city of Poway. These funds will support infrastructure, schools, and public services across the region. Arevon has partnered with California-based Rosendin to handle construction, which is expected to employ over 130 workers at peak activity, contributing to the local economy through increased spending in restaurants, hotels, and retail establishments.

Arevon signed a long-term agreement in 2021 to provide energy and resource adequacy to Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) through the Nighthawk project. The energy storage system will connect to the grid at the Sycamore Canyon Substation located at the Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) Miramar, a hub that distributes electricity to the greater San Diego area.

Utility-scale battery systems like Nighthawk are designed to store electricity during periods of low demand and release it quickly during peak times, enhancing grid stability and helping prevent blackouts and brownouts. The project will use lithium iron phosphate batteries, which are known for their safety and reliability. Arevon places a high priority on community and operational safety, and has maintained a strong record of safely operating energy storage facilities in U.S. communities since 2021.

Kevin Smith, Chief Executive Officer at Arevon, stated, “What sets the Nighthawk Energy Storage Project apart is Arevon’s years of experience and proven track record in successfully developing safe, reliable renewable energy and battery storage projects in California and throughout the United States as well as the project’s design, which includes added safety measures and will comprise the safest and most advanced batteries on the market today.”

He also added, “In addition, Arevon has partnered with the Poway Fire Department, who is committed to protecting the community, first responders, and the facility in the unlikely event an incident occurs. Battery storage is the way of the future, and Arevon is pleased to bring this essential energy solution to Poway, where we are committed to being a great community partner through the project’s multi-decade life.”

As the long-term owner of the project, Arevon is committed to community engagement and has supported several local initiatives and organizations. The company has established a $2 million community fund for the City of Poway to use for public projects of its choosing. It also supports the Scripps Ranch Civic Association’s public safety and community events, contributes to the Rancho Family YMCA’s youth and wellness programs, and sponsors the Deputy Sheriffs’ Association of San Diego County’s softball events.

Additionally, Arevon is an active member and sponsor of the Poway Chamber of Commerce, supporting events like the 2024 Poway Fall Festival and the 2025 Business Star Awards. Other partnerships include support for the North County Special Needs Foundation’s Heroes Softball Game, the Climate Action Campaign’s 2024 Nexus Climate Summit, and membership in Cleantech San Diego, a nonprofit that promotes clean technology and innovation. Through the Nighthawk project, Arevon aims not only to contribute to California’s clean energy future but also to bring long-term economic and social value to the Poway community.
