Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners’ (CIP) planned 1.5GW green hydrogen project in Western Australia has joined a federal government programme aimed at fast-tracking the development through approvals and regulations.
The Danish energy investor said the project joined the Treasury’s Front Door programme, to help it navigate regulatory requirements, connect it with government agencies, regulators, and identify “suitable government finance opportunities.”
The Murchison green hydrogen project plans to produce 900,000 tonnes of green hydrogen-based ammonia in the first stage, before potentially expanding to two million tonnes per year for export.
It has secured AUD from the Australian government’s hydrogen headstart scheme, which will offer production credits for 10 years.
However, timelines have slipped. Originally targeting final investment decision (FID) this year, CIP now expects to take FID on the project in 2027, while eyeing initial production in 2030 before reaching full capacity in 2032.
CEO of the project, Shohan Seneviratne, recently said that despite “global headwinds” for clean fuels, CIP remained in “extensive discussions” with offtake partners in Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, and Germany.
In 2024, the Danish developer a memorandum of understanding with South Korea’s Lotte Chemical to explore the supply, purchase and sale of clean ammonia from its US and Australian projects.
