China’s Jiangsu Guofu Hydrogen Energy Equipment (Guofuhee) plans to invest $30m in a 1GW electrolyser factory in Morocco.
Announced as the Chinese OEM unveiled “North Africa’s first” clean hydrogen energy demonstration system, the move follows a recent to deploy 20MW of electrolysers and five hydrogen refuelling stations in the country.
Guofuhee says the pilot energy system, which integrates solar-powered hydrogen production, storage, and grid-connected power generation, was a step toward “deeply embedding” Chinese equipment in Morocco’s national hydrogen strategy.
Details around the timeline of any local manufacturing have not been confirmed. However, it comes as Morocco intends to scale domestic green hydrogen production to 10 million tonnes per year by 2050.
In addition to allocating almost one million hectares of land for projects, the government has approved around $32.5bn worth of hydrogen and derivative projects approved by the country’s government.
Due to its renewable potential and proximity to Europe, it is viewed as a key future hydrogen supplier.
The plans come as Chinese electrolyser manufacturers continue to expand globally, capitalising on low-cost materials, supply chains, and labour, as competition within China itself intensifies.
Sungrow Hydrogen was recently 110MW of pressurised alkaline systems to Atome’s $665m green hydrogen-based fertiliser plant in Paraguay, having also confirmed “back-to-back” alkaline and PEM orders for customers across three continents.
