Climeworks rolls out DAC pilot project in Saudi Arabia

Swiss direct air capture specialist Climeworks has launched a live demonstration of its DAC testing unit at the KAPSARC site in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

The project, sponsored by the Saudi Ministry of Energy and think tank KAPSARC, aims to showcase the technology’s ability to capture carbon dioxide from the atmosphere under hot and arid conditions. This marks a departure from Climeworks’ flagship project and its follow-up , both located in Iceland.

It also fits with Saudi Arabia’s ‘Vision 2030’, which encompasses a range of initiatives aimed at decarbonising the country’s industry. This includes the Saudi Green Initiative, which has set a goal to reduce carbon emissions by 278 million tonnes annually by 2030, and a plan to invest $187bn in renewable energy projects to advance its pursuit of reaching net-zero by 2060.
