D-CRBN proves CO2-to-CO tech can compete with fossil options

Belgium-based decarbonisation technology firm D-CRBN has demonstrated that carbon monoxide derived from carbon dioxide can compete with fossil-based alternatives, following the completion of its latest pilot project.

The results showed a 90.5% CO2 conversion rate in a single pass, with an energy requirement of 1,100 kWh per tonne – or 1.1 kWh per kg – of CO2.

The company uses plasma-based splitting technology to remove an oxygen molecule from CO2, producing carbon monoxide (CO). The process is up to five times more efficient than the reverse water-gas shift reaction, which is the conventional method for generating CO alongside hydrogen in steam methane reforming.
