The Department of Public Works and Highways – Cagayan de Oro 1st District Engineering Office (DPWH-CDO 1st DEO) is set to roll out the installation of solar-powered streetlights along Masterson Avenue in Barangay Upper Carmen, beginning May 2025.

The project, which spans the stretch from KarrJackson Automotive Shop-Uptown to Wilcon Depot, includes the installation of 70-meter solar-powered streetlights and the construction of a center island. According to the Philippine Information Agency, the initiative aims to enhance nighttime visibility and improve road safety along the busy urban corridor.

District Engineer Ana Lee M. Manzano presided over a coordination meeting on April 24, bringing together stakeholders such as the Cagayan de Oro City Water District (COWD), Roads and Traffic Administration (RTA), Cebu Landmasters Inc. (CLI), and Xavier University Campus of the Future (XUCOF). These groups pledged support for traffic management, public awareness initiatives, and infrastructure coordination during project implementation.

The initiative aligns with the national government’s “Bagong Pilipinas” campaign, promoting sustainable infrastructure and the use of clean energy technologies in public works. DPWH emphasized that the solar-powered lighting system will significantly cut electricity usage while contributing to the city’s long-term sustainability and road safety targets.

Once completed, the project is expected to provide a safer, more efficient transport experience for both motorists and pedestrians along one of CDO’s most heavily trafficked routes.
