Egypt And Japan Partner To Develop 20 MW Solar And Storage Project In Hurghada

Egypt has taken a significant step toward expanding its renewable energy capacity with a new collaboration between the New and Renewable Energy Authority (NREA) and an Egyptian–Japanese consortium. The agreement focuses on building a combined 20-megawatt solar photovoltaic (PV) plant and a 30-megawatt-hour battery energy storage system in Hurghada. This project is part of Egypt’s ongoing effort to diversify its energy mix and reduce reliance on fossil fuels.

The partnership includes Japan’s Yurtec Corporation, Solar Installer, and Egypt’s Redcon Construction. Together, they plan to create a fully integrated facility that generates clean power while storing energy for later use. The project will also feature an eco-friendly information and training center to raise awareness and provide technical education on renewable-energy technologies.

According to NREA, the plant is expected to produce around 48,000 megawatt-hours of electricity annually. Solar generation will account for 36,000 MWh, while the remaining 12,000 MWh will be supplied through the battery storage system. The project is anticipated to prevent approximately 26,400 tons of carbon dioxide emissions each year, supporting Egypt’s climate-action goals and efforts to decarbonize its electricity sector.

Egyptian authorities have highlighted the strategic importance of this project. The Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy, Mahmoud Esmat, noted that renewables are expected to contribute 42 percent of total electricity generation by 2030 and 65 percent by 2040. He described the Hurghada initiative as a key milestone toward energy independence and environmental sustainability.

The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) will supervise the project, reflecting the growing collaboration between Egypt and Japan in the green energy sector. JICA has a long history of supporting Egypt’s renewable-energy infrastructure, including wind power projects and grid modernization efforts. This partnership further strengthens the ties between the two countries in renewable-energy development.

Beyond power generation, the project aims to build local technical capacity. The proposed training center will educate engineers and technicians in solar systems, battery management, and sustainable operations. The facility will also serve as a model for hybrid energy solutions in coastal and desert areas, showing how solar and storage integration can stabilize local grids and provide reliable electricity for communities, industries, and tourism in the Red Sea region.

The Hurghada solar and storage project aligns with Egypt’s broader vision for renewable energy, complementing large-scale initiatives like Benban Solar Park in Aswan and wind farms in the Gulf of Suez. Once completed, the project will highlight the benefits of international collaboration, technological innovation, and climate-conscious development, reinforcing Egypt’s position as a regional leader in clean energy and a hub for sustainable investment.

This initiative stands as a strong example of how countries can work together to promote a cleaner, more resilient energy future.
