Gazprom will likely further delay the start-up of its Amur 2 helium plant in Blagoveschchensk, Russia, due to the market being in a period of surplus supply.
Phil Kornbluth, President of Kornbluth Helium Consulting, told attendees at gasworld’s Helium Super Summit that the plant will likely start up in H1 2026.
Russia surpassed Algeria as the world’s third-largest helium producer in 2024 and is expected to supply around 13% of global helium in 2025, Kornbluth said, with potential to increase production to two billion cubic feet by decade’s end.
“There are 19 liquid helium plants in the world, and three of them are in Russia,” he said.
