Indian stock markets ended lower on August 18, 2026, as broad-based selling weighed on benchmark indices and green energy and clean technology stocks. The S&P BSE Sensex declined 0.63% to close at 77,235.46 points, while the Nifty 50 fell 0.50% to 24,166.35 points.
The clean energy segment largely followed the broader market trend, with most stocks ending in negative territory. However, a few companies recorded gains, led by Websol Energy. The stock surged 4.91% on the BSE to Rs 87.00 and 5.00% on the NSE to Rs 86.94.
State-run GAIL delivered mixed performance, rising 0.70% on the BSE to Rs 173.75, while slipping marginally by 0.06% on the NSE to Rs 172.00. Praj Industries gained 0.64% on the NSE to Rs 336.20, while Olectra Greentech advanced 0.36% on the BSE to Rs 1,323.00.
Reliance Industries remained relatively stable, gaining 0.40% on the NSE to Rs 1,321.30 and 0.08% on the BSE to Rs 1,319.40. NTPC Green Energy edged up 0.09% on the NSE to Rs 92.22, while Larsen & Toubro rose 0.15% on the BSE to Rs 4,082.00.
Among the decliners, Inox Wind recorded the steepest fall, dropping 4.00% on the BSE to Rs 75.04 and 4.07% on the NSE to Rs 74.95. Insolation Energy declined 3.10% on the BSE to Rs 95.40 and 3.33% on the NSE to Rs 95.13. Juniper Green Energy fell 3.85% on the NSE to Rs 241.68.
Battery and renewable energy companies also faced selling pressure. Exide Industries dropped 2.12% on the BSE and 2.32% on the NSE, closing at Rs 465.65 and Rs 464.65, respectively. Sterling and Wilson Renewable Energy declined nearly 2% to Rs 199.50.
Other major clean energy counters also ended lower. Adani Green Energy fell 1.21%, JSW Energy declined 1.15%, Borosil Renewables slipped 1.28%, and Kabra Extrusion dropped 1.62%. Indian Energy Exchange, Amara Raja Energy & Mobility, Indian Oil Corporation and Tata Power also recorded declines.
The session reflected cautious investor sentiment, with profit-taking and broad market weakness dominating trading across the renewable energy and clean technology ecosystem.
