India’s renewable energy sector has achieved remarkable progress, as reported by the Union Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE). Between December 2023 and December 2024, the total renewable energy installed capacity reached 209.44 GW, reflecting an impressive 15.84% growth compared to 180.80 GW in December 2023. This achievement underscores India’s commitment to its clean energy goals and aligns with the ‘Panchamrit’ vision outlined by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The year 2024 witnessed record capacity additions in the renewable energy sector, with a total of 28.64 GW installed. This represents a substantial 119.46% increase compared to the 13.05 GW added in 2023. Solar and wind energy were the main contributors to this growth, demonstrating significant year-on-year expansions.

Solar power led the surge with an addition of 24.54 GW, marking a 33.47% increase in its cumulative capacity from 73.32 GW in 2023 to 97.86 GW in 2024. Wind energy also contributed to this growth, with 3.42 GW added during the year, increasing its total capacity to 48.16 GW, a 7.64% rise from 2023.

Other renewable energy sources also showed progress. Bioenergy’s installed capacity grew by 4.70%, reaching 11.35 GW in 2024, up from 10.84 GW in 2023. Small hydropower saw a modest increase of 2.20%, with its capacity rising from 4.99 GW in 2023 to 5.10 GW in 2024.

Under the leadership of Union Minister of New and Renewable Energy Shri Pralhad Joshi, MNRE has implemented several initiatives to support India’s target of 500 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030. These efforts highlight the country’s dedication to meeting its climate commitments while ensuring energy security.

India’s progress in the renewable energy sector reflects a strong policy framework and consistent government efforts to promote clean energy technologies. The growth achieved in 2024 sets a solid foundation for continued advancements in the coming years.
