India Boosts U.S. LPG Imports to Record High

Despite higher prices, India is set to import the biggest ever volumes of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) from the United States in June as it seeks to replace still-constrained supply from the Middle East.

India is estimated to receive between 1.1 million and 1.2 million tons of America’s LPG this month, Indian refining sources told Reuters on Tuesday.

These would be a record high, and nearly double the 648,300 tons of LPG from the U.S. imported in May, as per Kpler data cited by Reuters.

India’s LPG imports from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) are also set to double in June compared to May, to about 300,000 tons, up from around 135,000 tons last month.

India, which uses LPG as its main cooking fuel and has felt shortages since the Iran war choked supplies at the Strait of Hormuz, seeks to boost its supply agreements. Last month, India signed a strategic agreement with the United Arab Emirates to receive liquefied petroleum gas.

LPG exports from the Persian Gulf supplied 92% of India’s imports of the main cooking fuel in the country in 2025, according to data by Vortexa.

With Middle Eastern exports constrained, the U.S. has been sending higher volumes of LPG, propane, and butane to Asia since the war began at the end of February.

LPG is a key energy source for Indian households, and stranded cargoes in the Middle East have strained the imported supply.

Around 60% of Indian households rely on LPG for their primary cooking fuel, and the blockage at the Strait of Hormuz, from where 90% of all Indian LPG imports pass, has been immediately felt by consumers.

In late April, India’s government urged local refiners to increase production of liquefied petroleum gas and has boosted imports of LPG from outside the Middle East, including record volumes from the U.S.
