Israeli electrolyser firm H2Pro plans to deploy its first large-scale system in Spain under a 25MW scheme aiming to use direct solar electricity.

Having partnered with local renewables firm Sun Systems, H2Pro could deploy its decouple water electrolysis in Tarragona for off-grid solar-to-hydrogen production.

The duo are initially eyeing 25MW of capacity, with plans to scale to 50MW, and then to 150MW by 2032. A timeline for the project’s start date has not been revealed.

Electrolysers would be connected to 220MW of Syn Systems solar power in the first phase. According to reports from El Periodico, the memorandum of understanding around the project entails a cumulative investment of up to €300m ($349m).

Hydrogen produced by the plant could be injected into gas operator Enagás’ natural gas pipelines, and supply chemical and petrochemical sectors

It could come as the first large-scale deployment of the DWE technology, which H2Pro describes as “hyper flexible.”

“The efficiency is between 10% and 15% better than state-of-the-art PEM systems from our minimum turndown up to nominal load conditions,” Chief Business Officer, Rotem Arad, previously told H2 View.

The technology produces hydrogen and oxygen in alternating cycles, flushing out gas bubbles between cycles and using multiple independently controlled electrode sets that charge and discharge like batteries.

H2Pro also claims it will be able to sell entire electrolyser systems for €500/kW – far below current Western averages of around $1,500/kW.

The company already has plans to deploy a 5MW system in Spain with Doral Hydrogen, which could eventually scale to 50MW.

This followed an with Latvia’s national electricity company exploring the feasibility of using DWE in its energy infrastructure.
