In a strategic step toward bolstering clean energy infrastructure, the Government of Karnataka has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with GAIL (India) Limited to set up 1 gigawatt (GW) of renewable energy capacity across the state. The estimated investment for this initiative stands at ₹5,000 crore.

The agreement was formalized on Friday in the presence of M.B. Patil, Minister for Large and Medium Industries and Infrastructure Development, and K.J. George, Minister for Energy. The proposed projects will include a mix of ground-mounted, rooftop, and floating solar installations, along with wind energy and integrated storage systems.

Minister Patil emphasized Karnataka’s readiness to support the initiative through flexible land acquisition mechanisms, including leasing from farmers or allocation via the Karnataka Industrial Areas Development Board (KIADB). He assured that all necessary approvals and incentives would be extended promptly to accelerate execution.

Patil also noted GAIL’s interest in acquiring land within established solar parks to fast-track development under its capital expenditure roadmap. The collaboration is expected to open up avenues for further clean energy investments in the state.

Minister George described the MoU as a milestone in Karnataka’s energy journey, reinforcing its reputation as a renewable energy leader. He highlighted the success of the Pavagada Solar Park, which currently generates 2,050 MW annually, and pointed to the availability of an additional 10,000 acres offered by local farmers for upcoming solar projects.

The partnership is anticipated to boost employment, infrastructure, and Karnataka’s green credentials.
