Kino Aski, under the leadership of the Atikamekw Nation, has partnered with energy development company Marinvest Energy Canada (Marinvest) to develop a 15 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) liquefied natural gas (LNG) project in Quebec, Canada.
Kino Aski LNG is expected to support the North America-Europe energy corridor, with plans to ship LNG from the existing Port of Baie-Comeau, Quebec. The developers say the port will operate year-round.
The project plans to use roughly 1,000km of new and existing pipeline infrastructure to transport natural gas from Western Canada to Quebec.
The planned LNG facility is expected to be powered by renewable electricity in Quebec.
Kino Aski will hold a majority ownership interest in Kino Aski LNG, with participation from First Nations across Quebec and Ontario, and Marinvest will have a minority interest.
The project is in the development phase, with technical studies, environmental assessments, and consultations underway. Discussions with governments, communities, and industry partners are ongoing.
Kino Aski LNG aims to decarbonise existing energy customers through the supply of Canadian low-methane natural gas.
Canada-Europe LNG partnership
Ottawa is looking to diversify export markets beyond the US and expand LNG exports into European and Asian markets amid global energy market instability.
In June, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said it is working on more LNG offtakes with Europe as it with the continent.
This comes as Canada its first long-term LNG supply agreement with a European buyer, after German state-owned energy firm SEFE agreed to purchase one mtpa from the proposed Ksi Lisims LNG project in British Columbia in May.
Reporting on wider North America-Europe energy relations, the Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis (IEEFA) expects US LNG exports to make up two-thirds of total European LNG imports in 2026 as .
At its proposed 15 mtpa capacity, Kino Aski LNG would represent a significant addition to Canada’s LNG export capacity if developed as planned.
