In its Strategic Vision 2035 document, which includes contributing to tackling climate issues, the company says it will “consider development/installation of new, innovative reactors that incorporate novel safety mechanisms”.

It adds: “We believe that it is necessary to consider various options for the next-generation innovative reactor, taking into account future supply and demand conditions and the outlook for the power source mix.”

Following widespread reports the new capacity would be on the site of the Sendai nuclear power plant, it has also issued a statement saying it had not yet decided on a location, saying: “We will consider various factors, such as the Basic Energy Plan, national energy policy based on carbon neutrality in 2050, trends in the development of the nuclear business environment, the progress of competition due to the power system reform, and future power supply and demand conditions, and nothing has been decided at this time.”

Kyushu Electric Power Co currently operates four nuclear power plants, including Sendai 1 and 2. There were plans for a third unit at Sendai, but that was abandoned following the Fukushima Daiichi accident in 2011.
