US liquefied natural gas business NextDecade Corporation has started the pre-filling process to expand its Rio Grande LNG export project near Brownsville, Texas.
The expansion plans would add an extra 48 million tonnes a year of LNG production to the project. The pre-filling for the development has been submitted to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) by NextDecade.
Excluding expansion plans, the site’s expected production capacity is expected to around 30 million tonnes of LNG a year.
Construction on the first phase of Rio Grande LNG – consisting of three trains – started in July 2023, with start-up anticipated for 2027. This part of the site will produce around 18 million tonnes of LNG a year.
