In a significant move to promote energy innovation and sustainable development, the Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN) has thrown its weight behind youth-led technological solutions at the official launch of the NBTI NextGen Innovation Challenge 2025 in Abuja.

Dr. Mustapha Abdullahi, Director-General of the ECN, led the energy-focused address at the kick-off ceremony held at the NICON Luxury Hotel. Commending the initiative as a timely and inclusive step toward national advancement, Dr. Abdullahi underscored the importance of engaging young innovators from all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory in shaping Nigeria’s energy transition future.

He highlighted a range of cutting-edge technologies that hold promise for transforming Nigeria’s energy landscape, including AI-powered smart grids, predictive maintenance systems, advanced energy storage solutions, and electric vehicle infrastructure. These innovations, he noted, are vital for improving grid reliability, expanding access to energy, and offering cleaner power alternatives for underserved and remote communities.

Reaffirming ECN’s commitment to research, collaboration, and sustainable development, Dr. Abdullahi cited the agency’s six energy research centers, including the Renewable Energy Barefoot Academy and facilities focused on green hydrogen innovation, as key pillars driving local energy solutions and technology incubation.

“The future of Nigeria’s energy lies in empowering our youth to think boldly and act sustainably,” Dr. Abdullahi stated. “This challenge is more than a competition—it’s a catalyst for energy resilience, climate action, and inclusive development.”

He also lauded Dr. Kolawole Raji, Director-General of the National Board for Technology Incubation (NBTI), for his leadership in conceptualizing the Challenge and fostering collaboration among government agencies, academia, and the private sector.

The NextGen Innovation Challenge 2025 is expected to serve as a launchpad for scalable energy innovations that align with Nigeria’s national development goals and clean energy transition agenda.
