Oman’s state-owned energy company Nama Power and Water Procurement (PWP) has a tender for a hydrogen-ready power plant with up to 1GW of generation capacity.
The request for proposal tends to appoint a consultant to assess the development of a power plant between 800MW and 1GW capable of 100% hydrogen-fuelled operations.
Applicant developers have until June 21 to submit proposals.
It represents one of the first projects intended for Oman’s domestic hydrogen usage, as the Sultanate continues to develop a heavily export-focused strategy.
State-owned hydrogen orchestrator Hydrom has awarded land to eight projects for up to 1.2 million tonnes of green hydrogen projects, with an ongoing third auction also offering tax breaks and reducing fees for more developments.
Most projects selected by Hydrom have been focused on producing hydrogen or derivatives for export to Europe and Asia.
Hydrom is establishing a framework for a with Germany’s H2Global Foundation for hydrogen produced in the region.
However, with demand for clean hydrogen lagging globally, domestic use could help anchor early demand for the project.
According to the IEA, the country’s levelised cost of hydrogen could hit $1.6/kg by 2030, comparable to grey hydrogen today.
However, late 2025 saw a setback with the flagship Hydrom projects initially planned to produce a combined 350,000 tonnes of green hydrogen per year.
