US-based OPW Clean Energy Solutions (OPW) has released a white paper examining the potential of cryogenics equipment supplier ACME Cryogenics’ XL-Bore Vacuum-Jacketed Pipe (VJP) technology for large-scale cryogenic-liquid handling. The report explores how the system could improve thermal efficiency and reduce heat leaks in applications such as space exploration and hydrogen refuelling.

As demand for cryogenic fuels increases, particularly in hydrogen mobility and space industries, the need for more efficient handling and insulation systems has become a challenge.

The white paper presents XL-Bore VJP as a potential alternative to traditional foam-insulated piping, which can struggle to maintain thermal performance at larger scales. “VJP can be up to 40 times more effective in reducing heat leaks than foam-insulated piping,” says Bennett Allred, Director, Technical Sales and Installation Services at OPW.

Cryogenic liquids, including liquid hydrogen, liquefied natural gas (LNG), and liquid oxygen, must be kept at extremely low temperatures during transport and storage to prevent unwanted vaporisation and pressure build-up. Without effective insulation, heat transfer from the surrounding environment can lead to efficiency losses and safety risks.
