Union Minister for Power and Housing & Urban Affairs, Shri Manohar Lal, chaired the meeting of the Parliamentary Consultative Committee of Members of Parliament for the Ministry of Power in New Delhi. The meeting was attended by Members of Parliament from various political parties representing both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha.
The main topic of discussion was the “National Electricity Plan – Transmission.” During the meeting, Shri Manohar Lal highlighted the importance of power in achieving the vision of a developed India by 2047. He said that the National Electricity Plan provides a detailed roadmap for strengthening the country’s transmission network between 2023 and 2032. This includes matching the addition of generation capacity with the increasing electricity demand across India.
The Union Minister informed the Members that the optimal use of electricity generation depends on having an adequate and strong transmission system. This is essential to ensure the reliability of power supply across regions. As per the National Electricity Plan for Transmission, about 1.91 lakh circuit kilometers (ckm) of transmission lines and 1274 GVA of transformation capacity are planned to be added during this ten-year period.
Shri Manohar Lal mentioned that the National Electricity Plan for Transmission has been prepared by the Central Electricity Authority (CEA) under Section 3 of the Electricity Act, 2003. The Plan, which covers transmission development up to 2031-32, was released in October 2024. He explained that CEA has the responsibility to prepare this plan in line with the National Electricity Policy.
During the meeting, discussions also covered issues such as Right of Way (RoW), the use of new technologies in transmission systems, and the importance of cybersecurity in the power sector. Members of Parliament present at the meeting offered various suggestions and appreciated the efforts of the Ministry of Power in expanding the country’s transmission network.
Shri Manohar Lal thanked the participants for their valuable contributions and suggestions. He directed the concerned officials to carefully review the suggestions made by the Members of Parliament and take appropriate actions to implement them, with the focus on ensuring the welfare of the people.
