Portland General Electric (PGE) has completed three new utility-scale battery energy storage projects, adding 475 MW and over 1.9 GWh of dispatchable capacity to its system in the Portland metro area.

These facilities are capable of powering approximately 300,000 homes for four hours during times of peak demand or grid disruptions. By providing added flexibility and backup capacity, they help ensure reliable electricity access for PGE customers when it’s needed most. Strategically located at substations in North Portland, Troutdale, and Hillsboro, the lithium-ion battery systems are integrated into the grid to better match electricity supply with demand.

“Batteries play an important role in helping PGE build a more flexible, reliable and diverse generation portfolio,” said Darrington Outama, PGE Senior Director of Energy Supply. “In addition to providing power during peak hours every day, batteries enhance our ability to respond to sudden changes in the grid and help keep energy supply and demand balanced. For customers, that means more stable and reliable power, all at the lowest possible cost.”

The new storage capacity also reduces dependence on costly short-term power purchases, helping to stabilize energy prices and support the integration of variable renewable sources like wind and solar.
