The General Authority for Statistics (GASTAT) in Saudi Arabia has released the latest Household Energy Statistics for 2024, showing important developments in electricity consumption and energy usage patterns across the residential sector in the Kingdom. According to the report, total electricity consumption within Saudi households reached 161,207 gigawatt-hours, reflecting the scale of power usage driven by population growth, expanding modern lifestyles, and greater access to home appliances and digital technologies. The findings confirm that electricity services are available to 100% of the population, demonstrating the Kingdom’s success in achieving full nationwide access to electricity services.
The report also highlights trends in household energy preferences for cooking. The majority of households in the Kingdom rely on gas, with 86.4% using it compared to only 13.4% who depend on electricity for cooking purposes. Among those who use gas, 97% use traditional gas cylinders, while 2.7% use gas tanks installed for larger-scale supply. The study revealed that 93.9% of households prefer iron gas cylinders, whereas 5.6% use fiber cylinders, showing a minor shift toward newer and lighter storage options. These statistics reflect that gas continues to serve as the dominant cooking fuel in Saudi homes despite the increasing availability of electrical alternatives.
The report further explores household awareness and behavior in energy efficiency. It found that 91.5% of households in Saudi Arabia expressed a strong interest in conserving electricity. A similar proportion, about 91.9%, said they follow energy-saving guidelines when using electrical appliances, suggesting widespread consciousness of power consumption costs and environmental impact. When asked about upgrading old appliances, 56.6% of households indicated willingness to replace them with more energy-efficient models, signaling a potential rise in demand for modern energy-saving home products in the near future.
In addition, the report showed increasing interest in renewable energy within households. Around 40.8% said they were interested in using solar energy as a power source at home. While the adoption rate is still developing, this rising interest supports Saudi Arabia’s national goals for clean energy diversification and sustainability, aligning with Vision 2030 targets to reduce dependence on conventional fuel sources and enhance renewable energy capacity.
GASTAT noted that the Household Energy Statistics 2024 are based on data collected through both field and phone surveys, supplemented by administrative data provided by the Ministry of Energy. This combination strengthens the reliability of the information and ensures accuracy for decision-makers and stakeholders. The authority emphasized that this data supports national policy planning in areas such as resource management, energy efficiency programs, consumer awareness initiatives, and infrastructure investment.
The report offers valuable insights into Saudi household behavior related to energy usage, conservation habits, and future preferences. It reflects progress in expanding electricity access, improving awareness of energy-saving practices, and growing interest in sustainable power solutions, all of which contribute to achieving long-term national development goals.
