Sembcorp Utilities Pte Ltd, a wholly owned subsidiary of Sembcorp Industries, and Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB) — together forming the Consortium — have received Conditional Approval from Singapore’s Energy Market Authority (EMA) to import approximately 1GW of renewable energy from Sarawak to Singapore. SP PowerInterconnect will serve as the technical partner for the project.
Set to begin operations around 2035, the project will deliver renewable electricity primarily generated from certified sustainable hydropower sources in Sarawak, transmitted to Singapore through more than 700 kilometers of subsea cables. This marks Singapore’s first large-scale, round-the-clock renewable power import initiative, providing stable green baseload energy to the nation.
Beyond advancing renewable imports, the project will strengthen regional energy cooperation, enhance grid resilience, and serve as a cornerstone of the ASEAN Power Grid. The Consortium has also signed a preferred supplier agreement with Prysmian, a global leader in high-voltage submarine and underground cable systems, to optimize the design and deployment of the subsea interconnector. Work will continue to advance the project toward full operational readiness.
