Shell Energy Philippines has moved its Hermosa Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) project in Hermosa, Bataan, into the next stage of development after signing key contracts covering engineering, construction, and long-term operations.
The 30 MW/60 MWh battery storage facility is being developed to strengthen grid reliability and provide greater flexibility to the Philippine power system. Shell Energy Philippines has awarded an Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) contract to Power Dimension, Inc. Under the agreement, the company will be responsible for the engineering, procurement, construction, and commissioning of the facility. The project will use the Power Titan 3.0 battery energy storage system along with the required electrical infrastructure.
Shell Energy Philippines has also signed separate Long-Term Service Agreement (LTSA) and Operations and Maintenance (O&M) agreements with Sungrow Power Technology Solutions Philippines Inc. These agreements will support the facility after commissioning through technical services, maintenance, and operational assistance.
The Hermosa BESS is designed to store electricity when power supply is high and discharge energy during periods of peak demand. This capability can help improve grid stability, manage fluctuations in electricity supply, and provide additional flexibility as the Philippines integrates more diverse energy sources into its power system.
Bernd Krukenberg, President and Chief Executive Officer of Shell Energy Philippines, said the partnerships with experienced companies for construction and long-term operations would provide a strong foundation for delivering the project safely and efficiently. He also emphasized the growing role of battery energy storage in maintaining power system reliability.
Once completed, the Hermosa facility will be fully owned and operated by Shell Energy Philippines. The project forms part of the company’s expanding energy infrastructure portfolio in the country.
Shell Energy Philippines operates as a power marketing and trading company and participates directly in the Philippine Wholesale Electricity Spot Market. It also provides energy solutions to commercial and industrial customers.
The Hermosa BESS project highlights the growing importance of energy storage in supporting a more reliable, flexible, and resilient Philippine electricity system while helping meet the country’s increasing power demand.
