International industrial machinery manufacturer Sumitomo Heavy Industries (SHI) has opened a new semiconductor research and development (R&D) facility in San Jose, California.
The facility is located at the existing cryogenic and vacuum equipment manufacturing site of its North American subsidiary Sumitomo Cryogenics of America (SCAI).
The company said it has targeted the US semiconductor and robotics market to strengthen its competitiveness and create new business opportunities.
At the R&D facility, SHI aims to support semiconductor manufacturing technologies by partnering with leading US semiconductor companies and higher education institutions.
SHI will target precision stage, motion component, and robotics technologies.
Precision stage and motion component equipment supports nanometre-level accuracy during the semiconductor manufacturing process.
The R&D facility is equipped for on-site verification of these advanced technologies.
According to the Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA), the US semiconductor industry reinvests around 20% of total revenue into R&D each year, with a 203% increase in US chip manufacturing capacity projected for 2032.
The SIA also reported that semiconductors are California’s top export by value ($11.2bn).
