Sun King, the world’s largest off-grid solar company, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Nigeria’s Rural Electrification Agency (REA) to expand cooperation in renewable energy access, local manufacturing and data-driven innovation. The agreement was formalised during the Nigeria Renewable Energy Innovation Forum (NREIF) in Abuja, in the presence of Nigeria’s Vice President, Kashim Shettima, and Sun King Co-Founder and CEO, T. Patrick Walsh.

The collaboration outlines three key focus areas aimed at accelerating Nigeria’s clean energy transition:

1. Local Manufacturing and “Nigeria First” Agenda:
Sun King and REA will work together to support domestic assembly of high-value solar energy products and energy-efficient appliances. This initiative aims to create local jobs, strengthen supply chains, and increase Nigeria’s participation in the renewable energy value chain.

2. Technical Cooperation and Data Sharing:
The partnership includes enhanced data collection, market intelligence and knowledge sharing to improve efficiency and implementation of energy access programs such as the Nigeria Electrification Project (NEP) and Distributed Access through Renewable Energy Scale-up (DARES). This effort aligns with the global Mission 300 initiative, which aims to connect 300 million Africans to electricity by 2030.

3. Joint Advocacy for Standalone Solar:
Both parties will actively promote off-grid solar as a key component of Nigeria’s energy strategy. This includes highlighting the socio-economic benefits of solar solutions for homes, schools, and small businesses, while advocating for supportive policies and financing frameworks.

The MoU marks a significant step toward public-private collaboration in Nigeria’s renewable energy landscape, reinforcing the government’s commitment to sustainable energy development and inclusive growth.
