Sunrun Inc., the largest provider of home solar, battery storage, and home-to-grid power solutions in the United States, has announced the appointment of Craig Cornelius to its board of directors. Cornelius, a seasoned executive with over two decades of experience in the renewable energy sector, brings a strong background in energy development, operations, and leadership to Sunrun’s board.

Welcoming the new board member, Mary Powell, CEO of Sunrun, said, “I am excited to announce the appointment of Craig as our newest board member. Craig brings a wealth of experience and perspective, having led large, complex energy development, operations, and ownership businesses in the energy sector. I’m confident that his insights will be valuable as we continue to lead the industry with our margin-focused, disciplined growth strategy—especially as we continue to scale our distributed power plant operations to provide dispatchable energy to the grid.”

Expressing enthusiasm about joining the company, Cornelius said, “I am excited to join the Sunrun board at this critical time for energy infrastructure development across the country. I have been impressed with Sunrun’s leadership in the residential storage and solar sector and believe the outlook for continued market leadership, innovation, and expansion is bright. Having known the leadership at Sunrun for well over a decade, I have deep respect and admiration for Sunrun’s proven ability to lead the segment and navigate industry changes. I look forward to serving on the board and contributing to Sunrun’s continued success.”

Craig Cornelius currently serves as President and Chief Executive Officer of Clearway Energy Group LLC, a position he has held since September 2018, and as Chief Executive Officer of Clearway Energy, Inc. (NYSE: CWEN and CWEN.A) since July 2024. He has played a pivotal role in leading Clearway since its formation following the spin-out of NRG Energy’s clean energy businesses in 2018. Before his tenure at Clearway, Cornelius was President of NRG’s renewables division, overseeing development, engineering, construction, and operations for its wind and solar power businesses.

Earlier in his career, Cornelius spent five years at Hudson Clean Energy Partners, where he served as Principal and later as Managing Director in the solar investing division. Prior to that, he worked at the U.S. Department of Energy as Program Manager for the Solar Energy Technologies Program, where he led the creation of the $1.5 billion Solar America Initiative—an initiative designed to accelerate the adoption of solar energy across the United States. Cornelius holds an A.B. in History of Science from Princeton University and an M.A. in Science, Technology, and Public Policy from George Washington University. At Sunrun, he will serve on both the Audit Committee and the Nominating, Governance, and Sustainability Committee.

Sunrun clarified that Cornelius’s appointment to the board does not imply any current or future business relationship between Sunrun and Clearway Energy. The addition of Cornelius to the board reinforces Sunrun’s commitment to strengthening its leadership team with experienced voices from across the renewable energy industry as it continues to expand its role in shaping the nation’s clean energy future.
