Tokyo Gas Engineering Solutions Launches 20 MW Solar And 20 MWh BESS Demonstration Project In Thailand

Tokyo Gas Engineering Solutions Co., Ltd. (TGES) has been selected to lead a major clean energy demonstration project in Thailand, marking an important step in the company’s international expansion. The project is supported by Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) under the FY2024 Supplementary Global South Future-Oriented Co-creation Project. It is also the first overseas initiative where TGES will deploy its integrated power supply technology. The total value of the project is estimated at approximately 3.7 billion yen, with financial support from the Japanese government helping reduce the initial investment costs.

The project is designed to address some of Thailand’s growing energy challenges as the country continues to increase its use of renewable energy. The rapid expansion of solar power has created concerns related to grid stability and the effective use of surplus electricity generated during the daytime. To help solve these issues, TGES will install around 20 MW of solar photovoltaic (PV) systems along with 20 MWh of battery energy storage systems (BESS) at several factories with high electricity demand.

The demonstration will operate under an on-site Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) model. Under this arrangement, factories will consume electricity generated by the solar systems during the day, while any excess power will be stored in the battery systems. The stored electricity will then be supplied during the evening and peak demand periods when solar generation is unavailable. This approach is expected to increase the use of renewable energy, lower electricity costs for industrial users, reduce carbon dioxide emissions, and improve the stability of the local electricity grid.

In addition to delivering environmental and economic benefits, the project will also provide valuable operational data on the performance of Japanese energy technologies in Thailand’s tropical climate. TGES will evaluate how the solar and battery systems perform under conditions of high temperatures and humidity while monitoring equipment reliability and local power conditions. The findings will support the development of a sustainable business model for future commercial deployment.

The project is also part of TGES’s broader “IGNITURE” strategy, which focuses on delivering smart and sustainable energy solutions for businesses. By combining solar power, battery storage, and energy management technologies, the company aims to support industrial decarbonization while improving energy efficiency and grid resilience. The successful completion of the demonstration is expected to create opportunities for wider adoption of Japanese-made Building Energy Management Systems (BEMS) and solar-plus-storage solutions across Thailand, supporting the country’s long-term clean energy transition.
