TotalEnergies Renewables, through its joint venture with MGen Renewable Energy (MGreen) called Solar Philippines TotalEnergies Corporation (SPTEC), has officially started construction of the North-1 solar project in the Philippines. The groundbreaking ceremony marks another important step in the country’s growing renewable energy sector and reflects the increasing cooperation between international energy companies and local partners to support cleaner power generation.

The North-1 solar project is being developed across the provinces of Bulacan and Nueva Ecija in Luzon. Once completed, the facility will have a generation capacity of 100 megawatts peak (MWp). The project is expected to supply renewable electricity to the Luzon grid and help meet the rising energy demand in the country. It is also expected to reduce dependence on fossil fuels while supporting the Philippines’ long-term sustainability and decarbonization goals.

The project received legal support from leading law firms involved in different aspects of the development and financing process. SyCip Salazar Hernandez & Gatmaitan acted as lead counsel for the project developers and advised on regulatory, contractual, and infrastructure-related matters. Martinez de Berenguer Valera served as legal advisor for the lenders and handled the legal framework related to financing arrangements and protections.

The development is part of TotalEnergies’ broader renewable energy expansion strategy in Southeast Asia. The company has been actively increasing its investments in solar and other clean energy technologies as it aims to strengthen its position in the global energy transition. Through its partnership with MGreen, the renewable energy arm of Meralco, TotalEnergies is combining international investment experience with local market expertise and established infrastructure capabilities.

Industry observers see the North-1 project as an important addition to the Philippine renewable energy pipeline. The Philippine government has introduced ambitious targets to increase the share of renewable energy in the national power mix, and large-scale solar projects are expected to play a major role in achieving these objectives. Projects like North-1 are also viewed as important for improving energy security, lowering carbon emissions, and attracting further investments into the clean energy sector.

Apart from environmental benefits, the project is expected to generate employment opportunities during the construction and operational phases. Local communities in Bulacan and Nueva Ecija are likely to benefit from increased economic activity linked to the development of the solar farm.

With construction now underway, the North-1 solar project represents another milestone in the Philippines’ renewable energy journey and highlights the growing momentum behind clean energy investments across Southeast Asia.
