Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and engineering firm Worley have begun the construction stage of what is slated to be the first full-scale carbon capture and storage project in the UK’s cement sector.
The project will use MHI’s process technology to capture around 800,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide each year from the Padeswood cement plant operated by Heidelberg Materials.
The CO2 will be stored in depleted gas fields under Liverpool Bay, as part of the HyNet North West Cluster.
“Using our ‘Advanced KM CDR Process’, this project will play a leading role in decarbonising one of the most challenging industrial sectors,” said Tatsuto Nagayasu, Senior Vice-President (CCUS) of GX Solutions at MHI.
