GeoPura will supply six fuel cell and battery-based hydrogen power units (HPU) to the UK Royal Air Force (RAF) to replace diesel generators at Ministry of Defence (MOD) locations.
Following a 2024 which saw the systems provide off-grid charging for electric vehicles (EV), the RAF now plans to use the units to support EVs, as well as “grid reinforcement.”
With two units entering service this summer and the remaining four by October, each HPU – which provides a 250kW power output – will support the RAF’s electric vehicle (EV) fleet and supply Air Command with additional energy capacity.
The MOD has already used GeoPura’s systems to for a combined total of around 120,000 miles.
The organisations did not confirm a hydrogen source. However, GeoPura – which also provides maintenance and support for the HPUs – already operates its own hydrogen production, as well as tube trailer deliveries.
The firm’s 15MW HyMarnham plant is also expected to be the first UK government-backed project to go online. It was set for late 2025 operation, but its current status remains unclear.
It comes after GeoPura secured a government contract to to one major construction project and a deal to provide systems to a UK port project.
