US-based Utility Global is eyeing the first commercial deployment of its off-gas-to-hydrogen technology under a new partnership with South Korean industrial manufacturing firm Samjin E&I.
Under the deal, the pair intend to install Utility’s H2Gen reactor in Daejeon to produce hydrogen for mobility, power generation, and industrial applications.
It is expected to build on previously announced plans to demonstrate the technology at a Seongnam wastewater facility, using biogas from anaerobic digestion.
While the capacity of the plant remains undisclosed, the companies expect to reach final investment decision (FID) by June 2027, following its in February.
It would mark the first commercial use of the company’s H2Gen reactor, which produces hydrogen from low-pressure steam and pre-treated gases like industrial off-gas or biogas, alongside high-purity carbon dioxide.
Utility said it will engage business and government stakeholders in South Korea as it targets a transition from demonstration projects to “full commercial deployment.”
So far, the firm has demonstrated its technology in steelmaking with an unnamed company in North America and begun exploring the potential of deploying H2Gen at an ArcelorMittal site in Brazil.
While commercial deployment remains pending, the company also announced its intended entry into the European market at this year’s World Hydrogen Summit in Rotterdam.
