Speaking to gasworld at the North American CO2 Summit 2026 in New Orleans, Maura Garvey, President of Intelligas Consulting, provided an overview of the current supply-demand picture and the factors shaping the market’s outlook.
Garvey explains how the recent loss of several CO2 sources has contributed to a significant tightening of supply. She also discusses the changing face of demand, including the continued growth of dry ice in food transport, processing and blast cleaning, alongside efforts by food producers to reduce their reliance on CO2.
On the supply side, Garvey highlights the continued contribution of ethanol while pointing to declining supply from some traditional sources, including hydrogen and ammonia. At the same time, new sources based on dairy and food waste are beginning to enter the market, adding another element to North America’s evolving CO2 supply mix.
The conversation also looks at the impact of plant outages and contamination issues, including those affecting the Jackson Dome, as well as the longer-term outlook for other facilities.
Garvey discusses the regulatory environment around carbon capture, utilisation and storage, including the ongoing implementation of 45Q and 45Z incentives, and why the pace of regulatory progress remains important for some emerging CO2 projects.
