An estimated 230,000 tonnes of food could be wasted over the Christmas season in the UK. Much of it risks ending up in landfill, where it will release over 160,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent, according to Waste Mission.
The waste management specialist revealed that the waste comprises on average 263,000 turkeys, 7.5 million mince pies, 11 million potatoes and five million Christmas puddings.
However, this could present an opportunity to the renewable energy sector. UK renewable energy producer Bio Capital turns organic waste into biomethane through anaerobic digestion, where microbes break down waste in oxygen-free tanks to produce biogas.
CO2 is then removed and the biogas is upgraded into biomethane before it is injected into the gas grid. The company said that this waste could produce enough biomethane to power around 36,000 homes.
