The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability (NRES) has called on large corporations, including multinationals and government-linked companies (GLCs), to take a more active role in adopting renewable energy practices, particularly solar power.

Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad said the appeal aligns with the National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR), which aims for 70% of Malaysia’s electricity generation to come from renewable sources by 2050.

“We want to encourage more corporate entities, be they multinationals, GLCs, or others, to be part of sustainability initiatives like this. We can see the extent to which these companies can play a role in adopting solar energy,” he said.

He emphasized that while individual actions are important, significant progress in the sustainability agenda requires active participation from large companies.

“I often say that we tend to focus on individual actions — ourselves, our families, our children — and that’s important. But there are two major players in the sustainability agenda; individuals and large companies,” he noted.

The remarks were made during a site visit to inspect the installation of 2,668 solar panels, covering nearly 12,000 square metres of rooftop space. The panels are expected to generate two megawatt-hours (MWh) of clean energy annually, reducing carbon emissions by approximately 1,330 tonnes each year.

With this addition, a total of 20,437 solar panels are now in operation across various facilities nationwide, contributing to an overall renewable energy generation capacity of 6.3 MWh annually.
