Zambian Energy Minister Applauds POWERCHINA for Landmark Solar Power Project

The Kabwe Solar Power Station in Zambia

Zambia’s Energy Minister, Makozo Chikote, recently led a delegation to inspect the 100 MW Kabwe Solar Power Station, built by POWERCHINA. He commended the project, calling it a symbol of the strong partnership between China and Zambia and a benchmark for Africa’s clean energy future.

As Zambia’s largest solar facility, the Kabwe station is a key milestone in bilateral energy collaboration and is projected to supply power to 30,000–50,000 households, helping ease the nation’s power shortages.

Chikote highlighted the plant’s importance in curbing electricity rationing and supporting industries such as mining and manufacturing, thereby stimulating local economic growth and advancing Zambia’s path toward energy self-reliance.

With 85% of Zambia’s electricity still dependent on climate-sensitive hydropower, Chikote described the project as a pivotal step in diversifying the country’s energy mix. “We are working toward a 1,000 MW clean energy target, focusing on technology transfer, grid development, and improving community livelihoods for a more reliable energy future,” he said.

The construction employed 1,350 local workers and provided skills training to more than 200 individuals, strengthening Zambia’s clean energy workforce. The project is expected to offer valuable lessons for similar transitions across Africa and deepen China-Zambia collaboration in the renewable energy sector.
