Strengthening its commitment to sustainability and climate action, Mapúa Malayan Colleges Laguna (Mapúa MCL) has successfully transitioned to 100% renewable energy, made possible through a strategic partnership with ACEN Renewable Energy Solutions (ACEN RES), the retail supply arm of the Ayala Group’s energy platform, ACEN.

Under this partnership, all of Mapúa MCL’s campus operations — including classroom lighting, laboratory equipment, IT infrastructure, and blended learning platforms — are now fully powered by clean energy sourced from ACEN’s nationwide portfolio of renewable power plants. This significant shift supports the institution’s broader environmental objective of reducing its carbon dioxide equivalent (CO₂e) emissions by 5% by the end of 2025 and by 10% in 2026.

Leading the transition is Mapúa MCL’s Institute for Global Sustainability (IGS), a dedicated unit established in 2024 to embed sustainability principles into both campus operations and academic programs. The IGS was instrumental in evaluating ACEN RES as a partner, ensuring alignment with both technical standards and institutional climate objectives.

“The ceremonial switch showcases Mapúa MCL’s commitment to reducing our carbon footprint to the minimum level possible for our institution’s operations,” stated Rolando V. Bitor, Assistant Vice President and IGS Director. “The use of electrical energy contributes significantly to our CO₂e emissions. By sourcing power from renewable plants, we’re making our reduction targets not only realistic, but achievable.”

With its extensive reliance on electricity to support digital infrastructure and hybrid learning models, Mapúa MCL benefits from ACEN RES’s stable and nationwide renewable energy supply network, which spans Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao.

“We are proud to support Mapúa MCL’s bold shift to renewable energy,” said Engr. Sheila Mina, Vice President and Head of Account Management at ACEN RES. “Educational institutions have a powerful role to play in shaping a low-carbon future. By choosing renewable energy, Mapúa MCL demonstrates strong leadership and sets a valuable example for others in the academic sector.”

The initiative directly supports several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy), SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), SDG 13 (Climate Action), and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals). With the partnership now in place, Mapúa MCL is positioned not only to meet but potentially exceed its short-term emission reduction targets while fostering long-term environmental responsibility across its academic community.
