JERA triples US LNG supply in shift away from Australia

Japan’s largest power generator, JERA, has struck a series of long-term LNG deals with four US exporters in a move to diversify its supply portfolio and reduce exposure to geopolitical risks.

Announced in Washington alongside US energy officials, the agreements secure up to 5.5 million tonnes per year of LNG over two decades, nearly tripling JERA’s US offtake volumes.

The 20-year-offtake agreements cover LNG volumes from four major US projects, including up to two million tonnes per year from NextDecade and one million tonnes per year from Commonwealth LNG.

Along with JERA’s existing US contracts, these deals boost its US LNG portfolio from 3.5 million tonnes per year to nearly nine million tonnes per year.
