Asia trio form joint venture to develop liquid CO2 ships

Leading Asian companies Mitsui OSK Lines, Petronas CCS Ventures and MISC Berhad have formed a joint venture to develop liquefied carbon dioxide (CO2) carriers.

The ships will be vital for transporting CO2 to designated storage sites and advancing carbon capture and storage solutions across the Asia-Pacific region, as well as integral to creating a CCS value chain.

The operators will target ‘strategic commercial agreements’ with CO2-emitting industries and storage companies.

The trio have completed front end engineering design (FEED) for a 62,000 cbm LCO2 carrier, which was awarded to Shanghai Merchant Ship Design and Research Institute. DNV awarded general approval for ship application in December 2024.
