ArcelorMittal scraps €1.3bn low-carbon steel plans; considers closing Steelanol plant

Steel giant ArcelorMittal has urged faster EU action as high energy prices and surging imports derail the company’s flagship decarbonisation projects in the German cities of Bremen and Eisenhüttenstadt.

It is also considering closing its Steelanol facility in Ghent, Belgium, which converts CO2 from blast furnace gases into ethanol. According to the company, the plant is struggling under “restrictive and unsupportive” EU regulations, which continue to impact the project’s profitability.

ArcelorMittal Europe cited a lack of policy, energy, and market certainty that “makes it impossible to move forward” with its plans for decarbonisation of its flat steelmaking sites in Germany.
