Imerys, the global leader in mineral specialties, has signed a power purchase agreement (PPA) with Akuo, a renewable energy producer, marking a key milestone in its global decarbonization strategy. The agreement will support the supply of renewable electricity to Imerys’ U.S. operations, providing 153 GWh annually—enough to meet at least 30% of the company’s electricity needs in the country. The electricity will be generated from Akuo’s Tennyson solar project in Texas, the company’s first solar installation in the U.S., scheduled to begin operations in the second half of 2026. The project will also contribute to local economic development, employing up to 400 people during its construction phase.

“The climate crisis represents a pressing and large-scale threat, with profound environmental and social consequences. To address it, collective action from industries worldwide is needed to accelerate the transition to a low-carbon economy, in line with the 1.5°C threshold set by the Paris Agreement. Power Purchase Agreements like the one we have just signed with Akuo are powerful tools that help us achieve our ambitious emissions reduction goal, to offer products and solutions with an improved environmental footprint that help our customers create sustainable value” said Leah Wilson, Sustainability Director at Imerys.

“With the Tennyson photovoltaic power plant, Akuo proves that the distribution of renewable energy to companies interested in purchasing renewable energy to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and combat climate change is also a process of creating sustainable value. We are honored to be able to work with partners like Imerys to help them achieve their environmental goals,” added Eric Scotto, Chairman and co-founder of Akuo.

This PPA complements similar renewable energy partnerships already established by Imerys in the UK, Bahrain, China, and Malaysia. Over 15 years, the Texas agreement is expected to help Imerys avoid more than 1 million tonnes of CO₂ emissions, contributing significantly to its target of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 42% by 2030 from a 2021 baseline. Beyond improving its own sustainability performance, Imerys’ renewable energy commitments also enable its customers to meet their climate objectives and advance the broader transition to a low-carbon economy.
