The opportunities for carbon capture from biomethane remain largely untapped but the potential volumes are substantial, according to the UK trade body the Anaerobic Digestion & Bioresources Association (ADBA).
Speaking on a webinar yesterday to coincide with Net Zero Week and ahead of the World Biogas Summit, Dr Gareth Mottram, Policy Lead at ADBA, said, “If we did deploy carbon capture into the existing biomethane injection stock, we could be saving around a megatonnne of CO2 a year already. That’s roughly a million transatlantic passenger journeys – I think the airline industry would have your arm off for that.”
While biomethane “wasn’t a magic bullet” he said it had the potential to bring down emissions.
“We haven’t maximised the opportunities,” he added. “We are getting better, we are producing more, but we haven’t incentivised any of the carbon capture side of things.”
